A way to attain this certification is to clear the PTCB examination. To clear this examination one has to undergo the required training. The training is provided through classroom training courses offered in various schools and colleges in the United States of America. Usually, the PTCB training courses run for a period of six months to a year. The training provides skills required to operate a pharmacy including the correct pharmaceutical procedures. The training also prepares a technician to provide the correct drug dosages and provide the needed assistance in the pharmacy's administrative tasks.

As mentioned above, to obtain the certification, one has to clear the PTCB examination. It is designed to test the candidate's knowledge and skills that are needed to perform the various activities required in a pharmacy technician job. To pass this exam, a person has to earn a score of 650 or more.

The exam can be given three times in a year that is March, July & November. In order to sit for the examination, the person has to have a high school diploma or a GED. Also, he/she should never have been convicted of a felony.

Continuing Education and Recertification

Once the person passes the exam, he/she is provided with a license in his/her name. The person is than allowed to use the credentials "CPHT" (Certified Pharmacy Technician). These credentials when added to the resumes can make a strong impact on the employers.

Even after the person has earned the PTCB certification he/she is required to do certain things to continue holding the certification. A Certified Pharmacy Technician has to obtain twenty hours of continuing education for recertification. This continuing education has to be received within two years of original certification or previous recertification. This has to be done every two years.
